I would absolutely adore having a raised garden bed although as of right now that would take way more energy than I have right now. My next best solution is growing a few things in pots. Yesterday the kiddos and I planted heirloom and a yellow variety of tomatoes. I got the pots from Ikea and the trellis from Home Goods. Now here's to hoping that they actually grow.
every year i say we are going to grow vegetables...and every year i'm overwhelmed with everything else that grows...weeds included. But i think i can handle this. Yes. Thank you. Off to Ikea today!

ReplyDeleteLovely trellises but they do not allow room for the tomato plants' foliage and main trunk which will be very full and tall. Tall tomato cages and then tall stakes if necessary later in the summer added into the middle of the cages are best. I have grown tomatoes in pots for many years and is one of the pleasures of summer. The evening temperatures really determine the bounty of the crop. Warm nights are best. One trellis would be nice in the pot next to the door. Garden stores have lots of climbing plants that would work great and bring color to the patio. Also fertilize every so often. ReplyDeleteOnce our yards are sorted a vegetable patch is the first thing on my list ... provided we don't manage to kill our Lavender on the front deck (I figure if we can't even keep Lavender alive perhaps gardening isn't for us, haha).

ReplyDeleteI have one bed stuffed with too many tomato plants. They are now heavy with too-slowly-for-me ripening tomatoes. Only problem - the dogs keep eating them off the vine!
