Glidden vs. the Other Guy

I was contacted by Glidden to see if I would be interested in "test driving" their paint and compare it to a competing and higher priced paint. This sounded right up my alley so of course I agreed. I was excited when the package arrived, it was much more than I expected...

The contenders: Glidden which has redifined their paint with a new formula, but is still offered at the same low price and Benjamin Moore Aura paint which I have used many times. To be honest I have only painted with Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams so needless to say I was intrigued to see if a lower price paint could contend with my first loves...

Both paints are eggshell white paint in case you are interested in the details. Glidden sample is on the left and BM on the right. This was the first coat applied with a paint brush. As you can see BM covered more of the black strip. They both went on with equal ease and both dried smoothly.

This is the second coat. Again Glidden is on the left and BM on the right. BM did cover the black strip the greatest. As a side note in real life I would never expect a white paint to cover black without using a primer. For example the light blue/gray that once graced my bedroom walls took 3 coats of Sherwin Williams paint to cover.

The second test was done with a roller. On the left is Glidden and on the right is BM. They look pretty similar to me...

And this is the second coat. Glidden paint went on much more smoothly and covered the greatest.

And these were my partners in crime, they thought it was the coolest "project" ever...

So what do I have to say? Well, the next room I have to paint (hopefully the laundry room) will be done with Glidden paint. The ease of using it and coverage with a roller pretty much rocked. Although I may stick with using BM enamel paint for any furniture projects in which I have none in the works, do you hear my husband cheering in the background? Now I just need to head to the Home Depot in order to pick out some paint colors.

*Oh, and obviously I was not paid in any way by Glidden or any affiliates. I did this test completely for the shear joy of it.

Thanks for this test. I've often been biased about using BenMo for painting projects, but had a good experience with Glidden for our Master. This confirms that I can use one for furniture and the other for walls.

What a great opportunity! I love that kit they sent you...it's so adorable with the miniature sizes and the compartments. It's very 'mies en place' which I love!

There was a lot left out...Like the color of the paint. I noticed both were 1 base. Did they include colorant? Aura is really a different kind of paint...low VOC for one thing..But paint is just not the same. Keep up the testing, but get all the information.

The test kit is what Glidden sent me so that is what I used for the test. It is what they wanted me to compare. As for the color it was straight off the shelf and not altered. Glidden is GL60II eggshell base 1 and BM is also eggshell finish Base 1 524 1X.

If you would like any more info Merrill be sure to just ask. I am more than happy to share:)

Use Ben Moore colors mixed in Glidden. Don't start using hardware store paint COLORS(Glidden, Valspar)...they change frequently and are often discontinued--I've had to 'fix' this for my mom like three times now. Last time I painted a whole house, I had Ben Moore mixed in a Valspar base. Same color but better price. Never used Glidden...interesting info.

interesting you use Aura paint. I've used it to spray cabinets for a base colour but generally found brushing the Aura troublesome. I, too, use the BM almost exclusively. I would use the Aura if it worked better with a brush.

That looks like fun! The kids look like they really loved helping you!

That seems like great fun. Were there any instructions that you and the kids followed? How did you apply the same amount of paint for both? If a little more paint were applied on one side that might give that paint an edge. Did you have to prepare the rollers or brushes? Perhaps rinsing them in tap water, ringing out the excess and then adding a set amount of paint to them? How did you measure how much paint you put on? Boy, at first glance that seems a very complicated comparison to do correctly but maybe that's just me. What are the differences in cost between a gallon of those two paints? Seeing your children reminds me to ask how well do these two paints stand up to cleaning if say a crayon were to mark them? How long are they advertised to last before repainting? I have children too, what about the VOCs? Does the Aura give off less because of what Merrill posted earlier? How were the smells?

oh my, myra now that's a lot of questions, ha! I will answer the best I can. Yes, there was a guide to follow although it did not say specific amounts to paint with. I for one have painted for many years and can gauge an equal amount pretty easily so that is what I did. This is not exact but I believe Glidden said around $24 and I think BM Aura is around $50 a gallon. Correct be if I am wrong I am just going by memory. As for children I find eggshell finish to hold up well just a good wipe down and we only use washable crayons in my home so not sure about that. I am not sure of how long they are to last. My parents painted their home in BM white 12 years ago and it still is holding up. As for me I change my mind constantly so my colors are always changing which makes a lower price scale good for me. Paint stinks to me no matter what. So that is a personal judgment call. Most my paint in my home is done in low VOC and I still felt like it stunk.

*None of this is scientific, as I said, just for fun.*

I'm a fan of Glidden/ICI. We build houses, and we use it almost exclusively. Fun project!

I have used Aura many times. It is new science and works simply on the principle that the more colorant that is added, the better it works. Because it uses water base colorant it is very low in VOC, shines when using medium to strong colors, dries in 30 minutes, and has almost no color rub off. It is truely break through science and in my opinion has no equal.

I got this too but I haven't tested it yet, I am going to try it in my dining room when I get around to it...I am glad to hear you liked it!

You are missing key points for the Aura. First off, you are not just getting a self-priming paint, that is nothing new, it's been around for years. You are getting a color lock technoligy that only Aura has. Meaning you can do a deep red (no more than 2 coats) in a MATTE finish, put it in a BATHROOM and scrub the wall. It will not burnish. I would like to see a glidden test in a matte finish do that! I am sorry but Aura is the best paint on the market, hands down.
