Oh My...
I know I so sweetly asked my husband if I could paint the cabinets, well, I am second guessing myself. My husband has almost given me the go ahead, but also so kindly reminded me that I said no big projects for this year (except tiling the backsplash and reupholstering our dining chairs). At first that didn't matter, but the more I ponder the more I realize how big of a project this really is. I then came across these images with cabinets the same shade as mine (although mine are not as fabulous) with the white subway tile and I love them. Maybe for the time being I should just be happy with what I got, my cabinets are only a few years old and in great condition. Oh, how my mind can change so easily. Let's just see how I feel next week.

whatever you do, definitely go with the subway tile! i think this is such a chic look that will always work no matter how many times you paint and repaint your cabinetry. i can't wait to see what you come up with, i'm sure it will be beautiful!
The second one is awesome!
Good luck with your cabinets!

Why don't you tackle the backsplash and then see how you feel? I love that second image so you might be happy once you do that.
I painted my cabinets last year, but mine were sunstained pickled pine from the 80s. The smell was horrific - my painters used oil based paint so they would dry hard and not chip. I had every window in the house open, and still it was terrible. I loved the results, though, but it caused a ripple down effect...once the cabinets were fresh and white, the old appliances (which were black) looked terrible. They were old, so we went ahead and replaced them. But it always seems like one change causes several more!
I struggle with that one too. I have a mid century dresser that is in pretty rough shape and it would be easy to paint it and be done with it, but I am afraid I would be mad at myself for ruining the veneer.
You know, there is NO question that my cabinets need to be painted-- none at all. But it's such a huge job. That kitchen is really cool, though! Sleep on it and see what you think!
Thanks for taking us through your thought process/deliberation. I find myself in the same situation on a daily basis. I *do* know that we will definitely be doing white subway tile.
Isn't that how it goes! I love the images...white subway tile is so fresh and clean...Good luck on making a decision!!! Happy Tuesday...Oh, and I am doing a giveaway over on my blog today so come check it out!
Funny! I know- you never know what is the right thing to do. My first thought is- paint them. Esp after revisiting Anne Turner's kitchen redo. Paint makes the biggest difference. But yes- painting cabinets is a BIG project!
decisions, decisions... I'm known to be indecisive as well!
I'm half-way through painting my cabinets. They needed it however. They were old, dark and looked like barn doors. Ugh! I'd love to rip them all out, but since that's not an option at the moment, I am painting.
I love these photos, too. Subway tile is just so chic whether in a kitchen or bath. Maybe you should at least wait until the backsplash project is complete... then decide.
i adore the subway tile with natural colored cabinets
I just adore the first photo!
Painting cabinets is a BIG project. I'm sure you'll be happy with the results once you're done, but I concur with another blogger--if you're on the fence, I would say do the backsplash first, then you can always paint later. Just thinking about taking the doors off, numbering them, priming, sanding, painting, etc, makes my head spin. I did mine before I moved in, so I didn't have to live here through the makeover. I do love my subway tile, though, and would probably choose it all over again.
My Mum just go these tiles in her new kitchen and they are stunning. I love them! Certainly a must
xx
My kitchen cabinets get the eye from me every other week. That is a big project, love the tile with these though!
ooh, love this!
do it, do it, paint, paint!
I have pondered the same dilemma over and over again, and I have fairly new, nice cabinets. The oak wood just hasn't grown on me yet after 5 years of living with it. Oh well! :) Thanks for sharing!!
having just finished painting our kitchen and living room and lovely shade of "macadamia" i am going to advice you hold tight for now! though, our painting was a necessity; the white walls were enough to make a girl go crazy. i love the look of the wood against the white tile. but then again i am marrying a woodworker. :)
Love the colour of the cabinets. We hope to reno our kitchen this year...thanks for this post!
ooooh, i am one with big ideas from time to time, and then when i realize what a gigantic pain they will be i sort of BACK AWAY SLOWLY!! hahaha. hope you can make it work as is. :)
Love this look! I think it looks great but agree that it's so easy to start and focus on something different. Can't wait to see what you decide to do!
this made me smile. we are almost done our kitchen, and I am back and forth every five minutes (on my back splash) I swear if I change my mind again my husband is going to loose it! but the thing is once its done its done. good luck! I do love the white subway tile.
Oh it is such a huge project as many others mentioned. Ours as well need to be done and we couldn't afford new cabinetry and they were country 80s oak. If you sort of like yours I bet some good hardware and good backsplash will do wonders. Can't wait to see.
i especially love the chairs at the table in the top photo.
painting cabinets seems like a HUGE task. whatever you decide to do, show us! :)
Love the second kitchen a lot.
Cheers

It looks lovely! Good idea to think about it til next week! I'm exactly like you, just as soon as I am SURE I love something, I see something else that I'm SURE I love more! :) xo
living with an element of your home that you dislike but can't change can be so frustrating!!! I know how you feel. The college student that I am, I have to live with thin plaster walls and groovy linoleum floors. But you're right-- being thankful for what you have is so much more fun than wallowing at what you don't.
oh these are gorgeous...what a tough decision!
How fabulous is that light! Oh, and I love the subway tile... we redid our guest bath with the subway tile and I've loved walking in there every time since!
I need those candlesticks!!
