Kitchens, Baskets, and Painting...

In our kitchen we have a lot of dead space between our cabinets and ceiling. I am not into decorating above the cabinets with ivy and knickknacks so I have just left it bare. I have always loved the idea of putting rows of cake plates on top, but the space is so high it would have lost the impact. Some time ago I came across this image and saved it into my inspiration folder, I recently came across it again and became quite enamored with the baskets above the cabinets. I love the natural feel it brings without any fuss.

So this brings me to our kitchen. I have started my basket collection. I have two so far and rather like how it fills in the dead space. So if any locals come across any lovely baskets for great prices then be sure to let me know. These two came from Home Goods. Also my wall paint color is reading a bit more yellow than it should in the shot. I swear it's because it's the color of the cabinets (more accurate color interpretation found here). My wall color is sherwin williams rice grain. Doug I am sure you will be so excited to hear I am back on my wanting to paint kick. We are in this home for the long haul so I mine as well make it the best that it can be, right? I am thinking this would make a superb birthday present to me.

I am thinking a color similar to Farrow and Ball Hardwick White without the price tag. Then again maybe I should take the plunge? As you can see my mind is not quite set. Something close to this...

I know this color would go with my decor quite nicely. Any of you know a color like this that you absolutely love or if you think I am going in the wrong color direction let me know? Also has anyone used Farrow and Ball? I would love to hear your thoughts!

Thank you all for your sweet comments on my last post. You all had me blushing. I suppose a picture or two a week would be no big thing.

I'm with you - can't stand all the clutter and ivy on top of cabinets! It makes me want to cringe!! I think the baskets are a great idea!

It's interesting to see in your first picture, that even though there is so much stuff, it doesn't look messy - I belive it might be difficult to maintain, though, isn't it?

If you are there for the long haul- then I say go for it when it comes to painting the cabinets!!

I like the baskets in the first image. I too am of the no knick knack on top camp. My kitchen actually has a two story ceiling which the hallway up above overlooks and the dust on top of the cabinets drives me CRAZY.

That second image is gorgeous. Love the light fixtures in both.

Yes, I say go for it, too. When we lived in Bham, we had cabinets that same color and we painted them (well, JT painted them). The color was called Cashmere and I LOVED it once it was all finished! Love the baskets. I've seen some good ones at Hobby Lobby!

Love the look of the baskets! We've filled some of our empty space with enamel food storage containers from the 60s.

I love that white kitchen. It's practically my dream kitchen!

I just bought two huge baskets from target--they might be too big for you--not sure. They are the "smith and hawken" line and have a chalkboard tag on them with two handles.

I love lowe's valspar woodrow wilson linen and BM's Monterey White.

I love the white kitchen with the green pendant lights. so simple....go for the cabinets, I think... I like Dove White by Benjamin Moore.

oooh, paint them. that would look awesome. I like the basket idea. I may have to do something like that in our new apt. We have the same set up.

Love the basket idea. I think Hardwick White is a little too dark (grey/green) and not as light and soft as your inspiration pic which I love, by the way. If I think of anything lighter and similar to the photo, will let you know.

ooh that kitchen is yummy with those green lights.. gorgeous! I think you should go for the farrow and ball.. I've been wondering all about that paint, in real life, that is.

I'm for a light, white kitchen and think that would look great in yours as well. I had lots of stuff above our cabinets and after removing it I was much more happy. The baskets are great.

your cabinets will look great painted! even though it was a pain in my side, I'm glad I painted mine :) and you can definitely get a great color for less than the cost of F & B paint. it is pretty but MAN!

i think the cabinets would be nice painted. look at ben moore, white dove (oc-17). it is always a classic white. i love the baskets; try michael's and old time pottery.

I think the baskets will look great. I found some pretty inexpensive ones online one time...I think it was the basket lady or something like that. I'll look for it again and let you know if I find it. And I really liked the post of your outfits...can't wait to see more!

Ooh. That would be a bold change. I like it (and the baskets).

You can get any hardware store to mix up an exact replica of Farrow and Ball colors, with Benjamin Moore prices. I have done this with great results. Your inspiration ideas and baskets are great!

I love the idea of baskets! We have the same type of space above our cabinets and I've started a collection of antique & replica pottery jugs.

I like Benjamin Moore Decorator White. Used it on all my baseboards and doors. I'm such a fan of white kitchens... but I struggle because I love color too. In fact, I'm trying to decide on a color of paint for my kitchen and I just can't decide... it is so hard!

Julie said...

So excited to see what you decide! I love a good kitchen cabinet redo :)

I love Farrow & Ball's colors - or should I say colours :). I think Hardwick White would be lovely on your cabinets! I haven't actually used their paint, but I've successfully had their colors matched at Sherwin Williams. I had Light Gray matched to use in my kitchen on the window sashes, "barn" door, and stools.

i think painting the cabinets is a great idea. i love the farrow and ball color. if you take the paint chip into home depot they can duplicate it with their behr line. i do it all the time and it always turns out perfect!

I personally love your cabinets. As much as I do love the painted white cabinet look I think it would cheapen the look of yours, as they look like good quality to begin with..know what I mean??
Either way do what you love!

I do LOVE the basket idea though. I think it will look superb.

Cheers,
Joanne

Hey, on the baskets... was at Southeastern Salvage today and they had a good selection of rectangular wide-weave baskets for CHEAP... plus a few other things you can always use:) Love your Melbourne post today... heaven!

I know this is an old post, but what is the original source of your inspiration photo? Just curious - I love it, too!

That looks like nice cabinet wood, and a current frame style--hope you didn't paint the cabinets. Painting over pre-stained wood will not give you the pristine "white" look you seem to desire.
I use Farrow and Ball paints all the time. They cannot be replicated satisfactorily in other paint lines-best to just choose a color you like from another paint line, if you do not wish to spend the money on F&B. Hardwick White is much darker than the natural grey shown in the photo you posted.
The simplicity of baskets are nice. You might wish to try a smaller size(s) for the top of the cabinets, especially over the stove.
